IRISS Medical awarded first patent in the US

November 27, 2014. London, UK – IRISS Medical Technologies, the Eye Data specialist, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a US patent for a novel method for detecting strabismus (“squint”). Filed as US patent  8,882,269, the method described is used within the algorithms that power the Volk Eye Check device – a handheld diagnostic assistance tool for ophthalmologists and optometrists. The new method involves taking a digital photograph of the patient and analysing it in real time to determine whether strabismus is present. Current available methods rely on manual examinations performed by specialists. These require a high degree of skill and experience, especially with young children. This new automated method, deployed within the Volk Eye Check device, will complement and assist specialists’ manual examinations and will enable non-specialists to perform a strabismus test. Strabismus, with a prevalence of approximately 4% in children worldwide, is a chief cause of amblyopia (“lazy eye”), which is the leading cause of preventable blindness in people under the age of 40.

Volk Eye Check officially launched at US and European conferences

November 12, 2014. London, UKVolk Eye Check, the innovative diagnostic tool for ophthalmologists and optometrists, was officially launched at 3 major ophthalmology and optometry annual conferences in the US and in Europe: the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Chicago; the American Academy of Optometry in Denver; the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in London. Volk Eye Check received a warm reception, with distributors from more than a dozen countries committing to the new device.

Dr Simon Barnard, Chief Medical Officer of IRISS Medical Technologies, published a poster at the annual conference of the American Academy of Optometry in Denver, Colorado about automated documentation of acquired Horner’s syndrome using Volk Eye Check. This is one of the first case reports in which Volk Eye Check was used in clinical practice.

Capable of a number of key measurements in real-time including pupil diameter, horizontal visible iris diameter, interpupillary distance, margin reflex distance, pupil eccentricity and strabismus angle, Volk Eye Check helps practitioners screen, measure and document ocular characteristics for general diagnostic purposes and for contact lens fitting. Volk Eye Check is a tool for diagnosing conditions such as strabismus, anisocoria, ptosis and buphthalmos, as well as a measuring tool of key parameters used for optimal fitting of contact lenses and for determining lid position in oculoplastic examinations. Volk Eye Check is based on patented proprietary technology which automates examinations typically conducted manually.
